PROGRAM ACTIVITY Foundation for Tolerance International
Program directions - Prevention and non-violent resolution of interethnic conflicts in the Ferghana Valley.
- Expansion of the space for dialogue and promotion of a culture of non-violence between civil society and power institutions in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Methodology The practical experience gained over the past 10 years has shown FTI that a multi-sectoral and multi-level approach is required for effective work with conflicts. Therefore, FTI pursues this methodology in its work by: Involving local residents and local authorities in conflict prevention and supporting local initiatives and mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of conflict situations Involving different community levels and different community structures in order to find alternative ways to solve conflicts Uniting efforts at the local, regional and global levels Helping the conflicting parties to formulate peaceful policies via the analysis of related problems and to develop recommendations for possible solutions Developing public consciousness and conducting information campaigns on problematic issues in order to motivate decision-makers to undertake necessary measures Implementing projects in multiple areas and in cross border areas, including: Projects in the trans-border area in the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan (Osh, Jalalabat, and Batken oblasts) The “Early Warning for Violence Prevention” project which workd in all seven regions of Kyrgyzstan (Naryn, Talas, Chuy, Jalalabat, Osh, Batkne and Issykkul oblasts)
Organization The FTI Management Board (MB) was created to decentralize FTI's power and management structure, thereby resulting in an even more democratic decision-making process. The MB consists of 7 people, including, 5 office directors and 2 other FTI officers. MB meetings are conducted four times per year at regional offices. FTI's system of reporting is as follows: Each project reports to its respective donor according to the schedule provided in the project contract The office directors prepare "General Reports" twice a year (semiannual and annual). These are later consolidated into a uniform, organization-wide report in Bishkek. Annual reports are presented to the MB for review and are sent to the donors upon the MB's approval. All FTI officers participate in FTI's annual strategic planning. FTI staff develop strategic directions for FTI Activities and develop annual and quarterly plans for review by the MB.
Organizational Development As a local NGO, FTI has been commited to its organizational and institutional development. Professional consultations have enabled FTI to develop a set of regulatory documents for its operations, including the Charter, the Internal Financial Regulations, the Personnel Handbook and the Management Board Regulations. We strongly believe that only a professional and sustainable organization with competent and professional staff can fulfill its mission successfully. FTI is continuing to improve and develop its organizational capacity in the following areas: |
