FTI - Aksy regional office

In May of 1998 regional office of FTI was opened in Jalalabad city with staff initially consisting of two people. In May “Training project” was initiated. Goal of the given project was to educate by constructive means conflict resolution through interactive ways of teaching.

In 2002 “Net of ambassadors of good will” project was initiated that included influential people from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It played great role in lobbying intereste of norder communities of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on regional and national levele, as part of “Warning and prevention of interethnic conflicts in Ferghana Valley”.
In August in 2002 newly opened Aksy regional office allowed to expand training program “Nurturing tolerance through interactive ways of teaching” on territory of Aksy rayon. This contributed to formation of tolerance culture of citizens of border region. Activity of FTI in Aksy allowed to research big conflict potential of the given region. Afterwards, Kyrgyz-Uzbek component preparation work was launched within august program.
In October of 2000 “Unity” project in Aksy region was initiated. Project was aimed to rapprochement and development of cooperation between students and teachers of border regions of Aksy rayon of Kyrgyzstan and Yangi-Kurgan rayon of Uzbekistan contributed to consolidation of suppressing factors of interethnic tensions in the given regions and increased opportunity for development of good neighborhood relationships and assisted to the creations of atmosphere of trust towards neighbors and NGOs. In August of 2002 project “For peace and development in Aksy” was launched. Given project was started in Aksy with goal to contribute in process of stabilization of political situation in Aksy rayon. Under given project there was monitoring on level of conflict in addressed groups of Aksy events conducted. Report of which was regularly distributed more than 15 international organizations, state agencies and NGOs. Project had regularly passed objective information about political situation from community to mass media and vice versa. In the end of the project there were concrete recommendations elaborated for international organizations, state agencies and NGOs on consolidation of political stability in Aksy rayon. Donor: USAID.
In May of 2003 “Support of civil accord and regional dialogue in Aksy” was initiated. Goal of the given project was warning of mass unrests of population caused by oncoming delimitations and demarcation of Kyrgyz-Uzbek border and definition of debatable territories status. Project was finance by HIVOS (Holland) and was worked on regular monitoring of conflict level of addressed communities, distribution of information among population of addressed zones about work par commission on defining status of debatable territories. There was net of mediators created under the project.
In July of 2003 project “Dialogue, trust and right” started its work. Project was initiated with goal to create constructive dialogue between population and representatives of law on Aksy rayon. Aksy regional office of FTI and partner organizations under the given project conducted trainings and field consultations for target zones, employees of law-enforcement agencies on law questions. On the base of Aksy office there was informational-law centre created and issue of informational bulletins started. Donor: Democratic Commission of USA Embassy.
In September of 2003 project “For politically cultural and democratic society in Aksy”. Goal of the given project was Goal of the given project was warning of mass unrests of population caused by oncoming delimitations and demarcation of Kyrgyz-Uzbek border and definition of debatable territories status. There was net of mediators created under the project.
In January of 2005 project “Increasing capacity of public organizations to improve condition of elderly in Kyrgyzstan”. One of the project’s aims is to reduce poverty. Practice shows that poverty is one of the main factors that provoke conflict. Poverty causes discontents and poor people tend to seek guilty ones. Majority of population of border communities see Uzbek side as a cause of their poverty (water shortage and lack of irrigable land). Moreover, latent cause of Aksy events in 2002 was high indicator of poverty in remote communities of rayon, located on mountain landscape.
In January of 2005 “Early warning for violence prevention” project was initiated.
In January of 2007 project CDI “Increasing capacity of local autonomy and civil society for social-economic development”.

Project # 2: Increasing capacity of local authorities and civil society for social-economic development.

Goal: To improve quality of services provided by local authorities and to strengthen democratic process of decision making locally.

Project # 3: Increasing capacity of local authorities and non-state actors in building neighborliness.

Goal: To decrease influence of conflict on conditions of life of ten communities located on territory of Kyrgyzstan and territory bordering with Uzbekistan.
